Two days in Bellagio – Lake Como

DAY 1

Walking around the historical centre of Bellagio and visit of the gardens of Villa Melzi

Considering that you only have one day we suggest you to start your visit of Bellagio from the “Borgo”, the town’s historical centre.

Walk down the stairs and from Piazza Mazzini, keep walking through the little archway, pass the car ferry dock until you get to the beautiful promenade by the lake with its magnificent Oleanders that takes you to the English-style gardens at the Villa Melzi.

After the visit of Villa Melzi you can exit in Loppia hamlet, pass the dock area where you can still admire one rare example of Larian (from Lake Como) Gondolas, sailing craft which were used up to the end of the XIX century for carrying goods and animals.

On you left take the flight of stairs that leads to the Vialone (the grassy stretch) where at the end you can see the awesome (private) Villa Giulia.

You can stop and relax in one of the benches you will find on the way to the romantic, characteristic hamlet of Pescallo.

From there in 10 minutes walking you get back again to the centre of Bellagio.

Following Via Garibaldi, the main road with shops, you get into the Church square (Piazza San Giacomo).

Here the most important feature is, of course, St.James’ Basilica, one of the best examples of the Lombard-Romanesque style architecture in this whole region.

If you are interested in art you can enter the main tower in the corner of the square, “Torre delle arti”, a cultural center open to different cultural and artistic experiences where sometimes there are some interesting expositions.

We recommend also to take a walk along the road to the right which leads us to the tip of the promontory called the “Punta Spartivento” which, literally translated, means the point where the wind divides. The views from here are exceptional and undoubtedly the best on Lake Como.

This is the point where the lake splits itself into three branches: to the right, the Lecco branch (south-eastern branch); to the left, the Como branch (south-western branch); and straight ahead of us, to the north, the Colico branch.

DAY 2 on the Lake

There is something that makes Lake Como a magic place:
the combination between nature and architecture: Villa Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi, Villa Monastero, the Castle Of Vezio……

You have different ways to discover the central part of the Lake:
Public boat: buy a daily pass € 15,00 per person
you can get off in Lenno, Tremezzo, Varenna, Menaggio and Bellagio;

Private water taxi: prices approximately from 160,00 Euro for 1 hour tour;

Boat rental: you drive your own boat around Lake Como (without docking)

If you want to visit the most beautiful villages (like Lenno, Tremezzo and Varenna) using the public boat transportation here you can find our suggestions:
Wake up early and have a hearty breakfast!

Get ready and buy a “all day pass” (±15 Euro) at the boat dock.
Jump on the 9:40 boat direction Lenno.
(every Tuesday there is a very nice market in Lenno, on the promenade by the lake)

In Lenno you can visit Villa Balbianello.
There are 2 ways to reach the Villa: walking along the park (20 minutes walking) or if you prefer (and that’s the way we suggest you) you can catch the little boat near the Lido di Lenno.

Enjoy Lake Como

In that way you have the possibility to admire the Villa from the Lake and, trust us, it’s spectacular!

For people who love walking we suggest to enjoy the characteristic Green Way Of Lake Como.

Our suggestion is take a boat to Tremezzo, where you can visit Villa Carlotta.
You can get off at the boat stop Villa Carlotta.

Villa Carlotta Gardens

You will still have enough time to catch a boat to Varenna!

For people who love walking there is the possibility to reach the Castle Of Vezio.
From here you can walk along the Viandante, an ancient path way, in 1h30 to the town Bellano
We also recommend the walk to the source of “Fiume Latte”, Italy’s shortest river.

If you don’t walk to Vezio, from the boat dock to the right a romantic walk way called “Lover’s Lane” leads to the centre.

The town hosts beautiful villas like Villa Monastero. The villa stands in a magnificent park where citrus, cypresses, pine trees and agaves grow and stretches
over more than a kilometre. Close to Villa Monastero stands the Villa Cipressi built between 1400 and 1800 with a splendid botanical gardens spread out over various levels.

Places to visit on Lake Como

It’s nice to stop for an aperitif by the lake watching the sunset, from Varenna you can admire the point of Bellagio and right across the lake you can see Tremezzo and Menaggio.

If you decide to stop for dinner there are boats running back to Bellagio until 11pm (depending the period of the year – Always check the last boat coming back).

This is just an easy itinerary that you can enjoy collecting information from the free App: Villas opening time, information on Loppia, Pescallo, the castle of Vezio, boat timetable and more! 🙂
